1. Asses Your Needs
How heavy are the loads you will be lifting? A forklift is rated in accordance to how much weight it can lift without become a safety hazard. The basic breakdown includes 3,000 lb, 5,000 lb, and 8,000 lb models. The 5,000 lb forklift is considered to be the industry standard and if you are unsure of the weights you will be dealing with, this may be the most applicable option.
2. Determine The Forklift’s Work Environment
A forklift has the capacity of handling great loads, but in order to do this safely, it must be able to maneuver safely on the ground. This is where tires come in. Cushion tires are rubber based and work best for internal applications. Pneumatic tires are preferred for outdoor work as they are filled with compressed air and can absorb the unsteady ground. Solid Pneumatic tires are also perfect for outdoor work but are designed to be able to withstand rugged ground and unlike pneumatic tires, are able to withstand popping much easier.
3. Determine Your Operating Costs
Your operating cost will determine whether or not you need an Electric Forklift or Internal Combustion Forklift (Motor). An electric forklift is perfect for indoor use as it can be easily returned to a charging station. For outdoor use where a charging station may not be available, a fuel or internal combustion forklift may be your best option.
4. Application
Forklifts in modern day are not only built to lift things straight up and down. There are various attachments that can be used to accomplish a variety of tasks. Comfort and safety are also taken into account in order to make the daily operation of a forklift a safe yet easy experience.
5. New or Used
If buying new is something within your budget, a new forklift can provide the newer technology and insure everything is going to function properly. However, if you feel that buying used is the way to go, we highly suggest this option. Used forklifts are a great option, they can provide you with the affordability you need and due to the high quality of maintenance a forklift requires, you really have nothing to worry about in terms of quality or potential problems.
