What Should You Inspect Before Buying a Used Forklift
When you start looking at used forklift sales with the intention of purchasing a used forklift, it is important to make sure you are well-informed. How much do you really know about the difference between a new forklift and a used forklift? You want to make sure you are buying a forklift that will meet your needs and not one that is just a waste of money.
What Should You Be Checking Before You Purchase One?
Mast and Forks: You should start by inspecting the forks and the mast because they are arguably the most important component of a forklift. Position yourself in front of the forklift. You want to look for any cracks or distortions. Does anything look bent or warped?
You should avoid purchasing a forklift if you see any noticeable cracks. When a crack is too deep into the fork, it can make the forklift unsafe for lifting and can no longer lift its noted maximum capacity.
Frame: Take a stroll around the forklift and inspect the body. Again, you are looking for any signs of damage. You want to make sure you take a little extra time to inspect the cowling on both sides of the forklift.
If the forklift you are considering purchasing has a closed cabin, you should make sure all of the windows are intact. A used forklift with a missing window is a hazard and a waste of money. At the very least, you should ask them to come down on the price. Tell them you need to put the extra money into replacing the missing window. The other option would be to tell them to replace the window before selling it to you.
The Engine: For a lot of obvious reasons, it is a good idea to give the engine a detailed inspection. You want to make sure the forklift actually runs. If you do not know a lot about forklift engines, you might have a mechanic you know take a look at the engine for you.
Simple things you can check under the hood include the oil level and the condition of the oil. This will let you know how well taken care of the forklift was. You can also check the belts for cracks and wear. The air filter should also be inspected to see if it is clean.
If you notice a lot of problems with the body or under the hood, it is safe to assume that the original owner did not take very good care of the forklift. Don’t inherit someone’s poor maintenance habits. Purchase a used forklift that will fully meet your standards, and will be able to provide you with years of service.
